Baha’is applaud U.N. Human Rights Vote

3/30/2014

The UN Human Rights Council’s overwhelming vote to extend the mandate of its special investigator on Iran was greeted with prompt affirmation from the Baha'i community.  From local to international levels, Baha'is have been concerned with the ongoing persecution in Iran beginning with the Faith’s inception in the 19th century.

New reports by Dr. Shaheed, the Council’s Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that Iran continues to make numerous and serious human rights violations including high rates of improperly adjudicated executions, the ongoing oppression of women, the use of torture, and the wrongful imprisonment of journalists, human rights defenders and minorities.

Diane Ala’i, the representative of the Baha'i International Community to the United Nations in Geneva, emphasized that “The vote to extend the mandate of Ahmed Shaheed is a powerful signal that the world expects action – not just words – from President Rouhani and his government on human rights,” said Ms. Alai. She indicated that “Iran can begin by releasing, among others, the 136 Baha’is who are in prison solely for their religious beliefs. The government can also easily allow Baha’i youth to attend university. And the practice of raiding Baha’i homes and arbitrarily arresting occupants can be halted with the stroke of a pen in Tehran... Given that Baha’is are committed to non-violence and obedience to legal authorities, these measures would pose no threat to the government and could be rapidly instituted.”

“Hundreds of individuals reportedly remain in some form of confinement for exercising their fundamental rights, including some 39 journalists and bloggers, 92 human rights defenders, 136 Baha’is, 90 Sunni Muslims, 50 Christians, and 19 Dervish Muslims,” said Dr. Shaheed during the presentation of his report to the Council last week.

The list of the oppressed includes seven members of a former leadership group serving the Baha'i community of Iran, now imprisoned since 2010. This matter has been of special concern to Baha'is on Kaua’i and around the world. The group was wrongly sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Science and Religion are not in conflict!
Baha'i teachings have brought forth this reality
since the inception of the faith...
.

NEW from Bahá'í Publishing, One Reality: The Harmony of Science and Religion is a compilation of passages from the Bahá'í writings that explores the relationship between science and religion. It sets forth the Bahá'í perspective that these two seemingly opposing forces can ---- and do ---- live in perfect harmony.

Meticulously researched and compiled by Bonnie J. Taylor, One Reality offers a comprehensive overview of the subject from a Bahá'í perspective. Also included is a thought-provoking and challenging introduction from John S. Hatcher, a highly respected academic and the author of numerous books about Bahá'í scripture and theology.

As 'Abdu'l-Bahá, the son of the Prophet and Founder of the Bahá'í Faith, states: "If we say religion is opposed to science, we lack knowledge of either true science or true religion, for both are founded upon the premises and conclusions of reason, and both must bear its test."

This book is an excellent addition to your personal library. It would make a great selection for book club reading, or as a gift to someone for whom science and religion are compelling areas of interest. Learn more by clicking here.

    A Life Passion

The passion of my life is the promotion of the powerful tools for the healing of our world They include unity and the spiritualization of humanity. sorely needed in our time. These ideals are primarily found as a focus in the Baha'i Faith, the source and origin of much of my inspiration.

The Baha'i teachings are now widespread and repeated in many traditions, as they have a great appeal in our time. Proselytizing is forbidden in the Baha'i Faith, and my passion speaks to the spiritual rebel, therefore I do not focus on the name Baha'i (or any other faith) specifically in these pages or my work.

The Baha'i Faith is the 2nd most widespread religion in the world.  It is still in its early years and is  rapidly growing, with nearly six million members worldwide.

Beauty beyond Words: The Language of the Sacred

8/14/2012

Ruhiyyih Khanum observed the following:

"Many wonderful prayers exist in all languages and all religions; but the prayers of Baha'u'llah possess a peculiar power and richness all their own. He calls upon God in terms of the greatest majesty, of the deepest feeling; sometimes with awe; sometimes with pathos; sometimes in a voice of such exultation that we can only wonder what transpired within His soul at such moments.
He uses figures of speech that strike the imagination, stir up new concepts of the Divinity and expand infinitely our spiritual horizons. Much, no doubt, of their perfection is lost in translation as He often employed the possibilities and peculiarities of the Arabic and Persian languages to their fullest. Some of His prayers, following the style of the Surihs of the Qur'an, end every sentence in rhyme--though they are not poems--and the custom of alliterating words, thus imparting a flowing sense of rhythm to the sentences, is very often resorted to in all His writings, including His prayers. Nevertheless the original charm and beauty pervades the translations...

(Ruhiyyih Khanum, "The Prayers of Baha'u'llah," Baha'i World Volume IX, 1940-1944, pp. 795-96)

One has only to read aloud the following from the Long Obligatory Prayer to hear the rhythmic music contained in the sacred writings.

"Too high art Thou for the praise of those who are nigh unto Thee to ascend unto the heaven of Thy nearness, or for the birds of the hearts of them who are devoted to Thee to attain to the door of Thy gate."

The Tablet of Ahmad

One of the great prayers of power--- and one of the deepest talks you're ever likely to hear on it --
Baha'u'llah's "Tablet of Ahmad" is now online.

Recorded in an informal setting in Dallas, Texas in 1999 -- shortly before his death -- Baha'i scholar Richard Gurinsky, author of Learn Well This Tablet, speaks from the heart with a wealth of knowledge.

"The Tablet of Ahmad was revealed by Baha'u'llah to be read when one feels himself in exceptionally difficult circumstances.*"

(From a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to the Baha'is of Kenosha, April 14, 1932)

Here also is an article about Richard Gurinsky and the Tablet of Ahmad.
